The treatment of functional limitations and musculoskeletal pain caused by neurological diseases is very specialized. Children who come into the world with paralysis should receive appropriate treatment. In adults, treatment should not be terminated after the neurological acute care and subsequent rehabilitation therapy, for example after a stroke, has been completed.
Most movement disorders require lifelong neuro-orthopedic care. The aim of treatment is to improve patients' participation in social life. Children should be able to develop without hindrance, young people need a good education, adults want a suitable job and senior citizens should remain independent and enjoy life for as long as possible. To achieve these goals, every patient needs the appropriate holistic therapeutic measures in every stage of life.
A wide range of treatment options are available to achieve these goals. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, bracing (orthoses) or various other aids, drugs and surgery. It depends on the experience of the physician whether patients receive the right treatment at the right time. Surgery is performed when all other methods fail, pain intensifies and the musculoskeletal system becomes a handicap.
